iDo you remember when Monique, the comedienne, threw Lee Daniels, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey under the proverbial bus. She said that she was “white-balled” and somehow blamed those individuals for her situation. She actually said they should “Suck her d***, if she had one!”

In another case, Samuel Jackson criticized Daniel Kaluuya, the star of the blockbuster movie Get Out. The movie, with an innovative comedy/horror plot, was produced by Jordan Peele. Jackson’s criticism was leveled at the fact that Kaluuya was from Britain, and as such, could not effectively understand what interracial dating would be like for African Americans, and therefore, should not have been cast in the film. Kaluuya’s gracious response was that his experience as a dark-skinned Black man more than qualified him for the part.

Moving on, in another situation, there is a YouTube video that questions why the Minister Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam, is still alive. The inference was that Minister Farrakhan must be an “agent” because he is not dead. If he was really doing his job as a Black leader, he would have been killed as Dr. Martin Luther King and Minister Malcolm X were killed. Apparently, the thinking is that white people are so powerful that any Blacks who oppose white oppression but survive are inevitably traitors.

Tommy Sotomayor is a YouTube “sensation” that has become famous for virulent invectives against Black people, and especially, Black women. Among his gems, are statements that African Americans are responsible for most violent crime in the United States, and that they are a more serious threat than guns. He also said that Black Lives Matter protesters are like retarded kids in the class, and called them a “thug group.” In April 2017, Ebony magazine said that there was an online Change.org petition to get Sotomayor’s videos removed because of the “incalculable amounts of emotional and physical harm” his videos have inflicted on African American women and girls.

Let’s not leave out the clergy. One Black pastor who will remain unnamed said that former president Obama “Deceived America” and “hurt Black families.” Another one has a YouTube video explaining why he hates Blacks. He said “Black people have been wrong about a lot of things for a long time.” One of his quotes is “Black People…you are animals.” He also said “Africans have never built a major enduring city in 3,000 years!”

To sum it up, there is a lot of self-hate in the Black community. People casually talk about it, but it still flourishes. Black-on-Black murders have this as an underpinning; the light skin-dark skin issue does as well. And the fact that many Black businesses actually treat their Black customers worse than they do those of other races is probably one of the factors that contributes to the dearth of viable Black businesses.

Ironically, the condition of Black people and the self-hatred that is evident partially comes from a lack of real education. Blacks have been constantly force-fed the white version of history, and because of this, many Blacks have no clue about the truth of the Black past. It is hard for Blacks who tell non-traditional stories about Black history to be published and have their material used in public schools.

It does happen here or there, but most elementary and secondary school students will probably never be exposed to the likes of the recently deceased Nigerian scholar, Dr. Catherine Obianuju Acholonu who wrote a series of scholarly texts demonstrating that there was a thriving civilization of Black people long before the creation of Adam. Also, Dr. Chancellor Williams, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, and other pioneers have made significant contributions to knowledge of our past.

Ultimately, the Black condition will not improve until there is an understanding of the power and glory embedded in real Black history. This must come from research. We as black men must encourage our younger generation and our communities to learn more about the history behind our communities. If not, we're in for a long, turbulent ride.
